Things 2 has been discontinued in 2017 and sync with Things Cloud has been discontinued in 2020. To continue using Things, please upgrade to Things 3 and migrate your to-dos.

What is the upgrade cost to Things 3?

We’re offering you a free upgrade if you purchased Things 2 between March 1 - May 17, 2017. Please contact us with your proof of purchase (the original purchase receipt would be best).

If you purchased Things 2 earlier than March 1, 2017, you are not eligible for a free upgrade. Please buy Things 3 like you would any other app after migrating your data per the steps below. If you don’t have any data to migrate, find Things on the App Store here.

How do I migrate my data?

Mac

Please make sure the following is true:

  1. Things 2 must be installed on your Mac.
  2. Things 2 must contain your data.
  3. You have no data in Things 3 that you need to keep.

Please don’t skip any steps in the following instructions or the import won’t succeed and you will have to start again from the very beginning.

If you have installed Things 3 already on this Mac

These steps are for you if you installed the Things 3 trial already on this Mac (now or in the past), or you purchased Things 3 from the App Store and it downloaded to your Mac.

  1. If Things 3 (the current app) is in your Downloads folder, delete it from there before proceeding.
  2. Click on your empty Desktop, and then press the keys ⌘ Cmd ⇧ Shift G at the same time.
  3. Paste the following path into the sheet that appears, and hit Return: ~/Library/Containers/com.culturedcode.ThingsMac
  4. Delete the folder Things (you are inside of this folder).
  5. Press ⌘ Cmd ⇧ Shift G again, paste in this path, and hit Return: ~/Library/Group Containers/JLMPQHK86H.com.culturedcode.ThingsMac/
  6. Delete the folder JLMPQHK86H.com.culturedcode.ThingsMac (you are inside of this folder).
  7. Now download an older trial version of Things 3. Only this specific version has the import option. Click this link to download.
  8. The file should be in your Downloads folder. Unzip it, if it hasn’t already happened.
  9. Double-click the app to launch it. If you see a prompt to update to a newer version, skip it. Don’t update to a newer version.
  10. Go to ThingsSettings.
  11. Click Import to move the data into Things 3.
  12. After the import has successfully finished, go to ThingsSettingsThings Cloud.
  13. Create a Things Cloud account and upload your to-dos. If you already have a Things Cloud account, sign in. Important: if you are prompted what to do next, select to “Keep only the to-dos from this Mac”.
  14. After the successful sync, quit the trial app and move it to the Trash on your Mac – your data will not be affected.
  15. Download your Things 3 purchase from the App Store or download a current trial version.
  16. The current app should pick up your to-dos automatically. If not, go to ThingsSettingsThings Cloud and sign into your Things Cloud account.
  17. You have completed the migration process!

Do not keep using the app that you downloaded in step 7. It’s an outdated version that should only be used for data migration.
