Things 2 has been discontinued in 2017 and sync with Things Cloud has been discontinued in 2020. To continue using Things, please upgrade to Things 3. To migrate your to-dos, please follow the steps below.

Mac

Please make sure the following is true:

  1. Things 2 must be installed on your Mac.
  2. In Things 2, you must see the data you want to migrate.
  3. You have no data in Things 3 that you need to keep.

Please don’t skip any steps in the following instructions or the import won’t succeed and you will have to start again from the very beginning.

If you have installed Things 3 already on this Mac

These steps are for you if you installed the Things 3 trial already on this Mac (now or in the past), or you purchased Things 3 from the App Store and it downloaded to your Mac.

  1. If Things 3 (the current app) is in your Downloads folder, delete it from there before proceeding.
  2. Click on your empty Desktop, and then press the keys ⌘ Cmd ⇧ Shift G at the same time.
  3. A new window will open. Copy and paste in this path: ~/Library/Containers/com.culturedcode.ThingsMac
  4. Hit Return.
  5. Delete the folder Things (you are inside of this folder).
  6. Press ⌘ Cmd ⇧ Shift G again, and paste in this path: ~/Library/Group Containers/JLMPQHK86H.com.culturedcode.ThingsMac/
  7. Delete the folder JLMPQHK86H.com.culturedcode.ThingsMac (you are inside of this folder).
  8. Now download an older trial version of Things 3. Only this specific version has the import option. Click this link to download.
  9. The file should be in your Downloads folder. Unzip it, if it hasn’t already happened.
  10. Double-click the app to launch it.
  11. Go to ThingsPreferences.
  12. Click Import to move the data into Things 3.
  13. After the import has successfully finished, go to ThingsPreferencesThings Cloud.
  14. Create a Things Cloud account and upload your to-dos. If you already have a Things Cloud account, sign in. Important: if you are prompted what to do next, select to “Keep only the to-dos from this Mac”.
  15. After the successful sync, quit the trial app and move it to the Trash on your Mac – your data will not be affected.
  16. Download your Things 3 purchase from the App Store or download a current trial version.
  17. The current app should pick up your to-dos automatically. If not, go to ThingsPreferencesThings Cloud and sign into your Things Cloud account.

Do not keep using the trial version that you downloaded in step 7. It’s an older version that still supported the local data migration, but we’ve updated the app significantly since then.

If you have never before installed Things 3 on this Mac

These instructions are for you if you have never installed Things 3 on this Mac before (trial version or purchased from the Mac App Store). If you ever used Things 3 in the past on this Mac, these steps will not work. Please scroll back up to the other set of instructions.

  1. On the Mac, download an older trial version of Things 3. Only this specific version has the import option. Click this link to download.
  2. The file should be in your Downloads folder. Unzip it, if it hasn’t already happened.
  3. Double-click the app to launch it. If you see a prompt to update to a newer version, skip it. Don’t update to a newer version.
  4. Go to ThingsPreferences.
  5. Click Import to move the data into Things 3.
  6. After the import has successfully finished, go to ThingsPreferencesThings Cloud.
  7. Create a Things Cloud account and upload your to-dos. If you already have a Things Cloud account, sign in. Important: if you are prompted what to do next, select to “Keep only the to-dos from this Mac”.
  8. After the successful sync, quit the trial app and move it to the Trash on your Mac – your data will not be affected.
  9. Download your Things 3 purchase from the App Store or download a current trial version.
  10. The current app should pick up your to-dos automatically. If not, go to ThingsPreferencesThings Cloud and sign into your Things Cloud account.

Do not keep using the trial version that you downloaded in step 1. It’s an older version that still supported the local data migration, but we’ve updated the app significantly since then.

iPad & iPhone
  1. Open Things 3. (Both Things 2 and Things 3 are called “Things” on your Home Screen. The new one will show you a “Welcome” animation.)
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Settings.
  3. Tap ↓Import > ↓Import from Things 2.

Missing the import option in Things 3? Your Things 2 version might be too old. You can check by going to Things 2 → Settings → About. If you see anything less than 2.8.10, please update Things 2 through the App Store first, then try the instructions above again.

If you open Things 2 and see the following message: “Things Needs to be Updated. The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of iOS”, please contact us for assistance.
