Changing Things’ Language

Things supports several different languages. Here we’ll show you which languages are available and how to change from one language to another.

You can run Things in one of the following nine languages:

English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese (Traditional or Simplified).

If your device’s Operating System is set to one of these languages, Things will display in the same language. If your device is set to a language that Things does not support, Things will default to English.

Change Things’ language

If your device is running macOS 10.15, iOS 13, iPadOS 13, or later, you can set Things’ language independently of the system. For example, your system might be set to German, but you can run Things in English.

Here’s how to set a different language for Things:

Mac
  1. On your Mac, quit Things.
  2. Open System Preferences > Language & Region > Apps
  3. Click +
  4. From the Application pop-up menu, select Things.
  5. From the Language pop-up menu, select your desired language.
  6. Click Add to confirm your choice.

Note that the pop-up menu will only show languages that Things supports.

iPad
  1. Force-quit Things via the App Switcher.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Scroll down to Things and tap it.
  4. Tap Language. (If the button’s missing, read this.)
  5. Select your desired language.

Note that you will only be offered languages that Things supports.

iPhone
  1. Force-quit Things via the App Switcher.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Scroll down to Things and tap it.
  4. Tap Language. (If the button’s missing, read this.)
  5. Select your desired language.

Note that you will only be offered languages that Things supports.

Watch

Display Language

There is no way to change Things’ language directly via the Apple Watch; it will display in whatever language you have set for Things on your iPhone. Click the iPhone tab above to change Things’ language.

Dictation Language

When dictating to-dos in Things, it’s possible to choose which language you’d like to speak.

Before trying this, you will need to enable the international keyboard for a secondary language in your iPhone’s Settings. Here’s how.

Once you’ve enabled the secondary language, here’s how to use it in Things:

  1. In Things, tap + > Dictation
  2. Before you speak, press down firmly on your watch’s screen.
  3. Tap Choose Language
  4. Select your desired language.
  5. Speak the title of your to-do.

Please note that dictation is part of watchOS, not part of Things. We have no way to make it remember which language you’d like to speak.
