You’ve been directed to this page from a warning in Things, or an email we’ve sent to affected users, which says:

⚠️ Sync might stop working for you soon – Action Required!
Your Things Cloud account shows that one of your devices is running an older version of iOS or macOS. Our upcoming update, Things 3.13, is not compatible with that device.

We sent out this in-app warning on September 10, 11, and 14 in 2020. We followed up with an email to affected users on September 15, 2020, in case some hadn’t opened Things for a few days.

Why did I receive this message?

Things 3.13 was released on September 17, 2020. If you install Things 3.13 on any of your devices, all your other devices will also need to install the update to continue syncing.

However, at least one one of your devices is currently running an old Operating System. You won't be able to install Things 3.13 on that device.

What should I do?

If you happen to only use Things on one device, then there is no problem after all – you will continue running the older version of Things you already have, and nothing will change. You can close this page and go on with your day.

However, if you are syncing your to-dos with multiple devices, you should take action right away:

  1. The best option is to upgrade the Operating System on each of your devices to at least macOS 10.13 and iOS 12.1. Many older devices can be upgraded, and this will enable them to install Things 3.13.
  2. For much older devices that can’t upgrade the Operating System, a fallback option is available (see below).

Upgrade your Operating System (recommended option)

Please upgrade to the latest available Operating System for all your devices:

If your Mac is running a much older version, you might need these instructions to upgrade to macOS High Sierra.

After upgrading the Operating System on each of your devices, check whether or not they are now running these minimum versions:

  • Mac: macOS 10.13 or later
  • iPad: iPadOS 12.1 or later
  • iPhone: iOS 12.1 or later
  • Apple Watch: watchOS 5 or later

If you’ve successfully upgraded all your devices to the required OS versions above, you’re all set. They will all be able to update to Things 3.13. You can close this page.

If at least one device could not be upgraded to the required OS version, please proceed to the fallback option below.

Disable automatic app updates (fallback option)

Only required if upgrading to the minimum OS versions didn't succeed on one of your devices.

If at least one of your devices can’t upgrade to the minimum required OS version, and you want to continue syncing with that device, you have to make sure that none of your other devices update to Things 3.13.

To ensure that none of your devices update to Things 3.13, you have to disable automatic app updates on all of them:

Going forward, your devices will not install new versions of apps automatically; you will need to install them manually from inside the App Store app. But you will need to be careful that you never install a new version of Things. If you do, your older devices will no longer be able to sync with your Things Cloud account.
