For those of you making the journey to the Moscone Center in San Francisco come January, we invite you to stop by our kiosk located in the Mac Developer Pavilion (booth #1438).
That’s right, Cultured Code will be exhibiting at Macworld Expo 2009!
The Mac Developer Pavilion is located in the South Hall, right behind Apple’s booth. After you’re done checking out whatever coolness Apple releases at Macworld, stop by and say hello. Christian, Werner, and I will be on hand to give you a demo and chat about Things.
For us, what’s so exciting about Macworld is that it represents the first major milestone for Things desktop. In case you missed the announcement, Things 1.0 will be released on January 6, 2009 — a product my team has been working on for over a year.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be hard at work finishing up the final features for the 1.0 release. We’ll also be working on some really cool accompanying details, including screencasts and a really cool print ad.
ProTip #1: If you want a free exhibit hall pass for Macworld Expo 2009, be one of the first 100 people to click here. UPDATE: They’re all gone. Hopefully you’ll still come to Macworld and stop by our booth to say hello! ;)
UPDATE 2: We have another 100 free expo only passes available, so click here and get ‘em while they last!
UPDATE 3: They’re all gone. We’re looking forward to meeting all 200+ of you at Macworld Expo 2009!
ProTip #2: If you want to receive a 15% discount on select Macworld Expo conference programs, click here. There is no limit to the number of users who take advantage of this discount.
Pinging is currently not allowed.
Thanks Michael for the Infos. What about Things Touch in the time until Macworld Expo? One misses are AREAs, TAGs and Syncing over MobileMe (or kind of that) at the moment, it not fully functional the Combo Things Desktop and Things Touch :-(
This is exactly what I need in these apps. Things 1.0 release, Areas and Tags in Things Touch, and MobileMe syncing.
Heh, Jeff, seconded! :o)
Well, I just bought Things Touch for my iPhone last week and I love it. Looking forward to see what great stuff you will do next.
Congrats and good work :-)
See you guys there :)
-Connor
Looking forward to meeting you at the show!
I haven’t seen this addressed but it’s making me CRAZY. I love this app and use it daily, so I really appreciate all the work that has gone into this. However, I really need the sync to pull items over to the ipod in the same order as I place them on the computer. There isn’t any other real simple way to put my stuff in order of priority. I keep my day organized by setting up my tasks in order (or my grocery list according to the location). Then I do them one after another as planned. I tend to keep too many things on my today list because I have tons of pressing items. If they aren’t in order, I find myself constantly sifting through a list of 30 items trying to remember what the next critical item is. I don’t usually have time to keep going through the list. I organize once in the morning and then get going. If my day tnen includes errands, I grab my ipod and go. So this system just doesn’t work well for me. Is there any work being done to fix the sync so the lists are identical after the sync?
@Karen, i agree. It’s a big miss…
I can’t wait when the collaboration with team will be integrated. This will rock my world. It will be a massive game changer!!!
I would also like to have a shuffle function
I see that someone has been brought in now to deal with tags for Things Touch. That will be the game changer, because you can’t really use it for GTD without tags. Very excited to see this when it’s ready. Thanks guys!
@Truni, @Jeff, @Hannes, Tags will be in the next update of Things Touch (we mentioned that on Twitter already). Implementing Areas for the iPhone also has high priority.
@Karen, I believe you are talking about the Today list. This is the only place where the ordering on the iPhone and the Mac can be different.
The reason lies in the fact that the Today list on the iPhone can be re-ordered more flexibly than the Today list on the desktop version. On the desktop the Today list is always grouped by project or area, while on the iPhone it is possible to re-order across project or area boundaries.
We will be adding more flexibility to the Today list with the next update of the desktop version.
Hmmm Interesting Jurgen. That just gave me an idea for a work around. I can get my tasks set up on the computer in “Today” and then copy it over to a project I created called Today. When I rearrange items in the project, it transfers over to the ipod. Does exactly what I need. THANKS! I am a happy camper now!
As to your answer to the Today list, it doesn’t have anything to do with projects. The vast majority of my tasks are in Today without being attached to a project. When I reorder those items in one location (ipod or computer), it doesn’t transfer. I guess what you’re saying is that it doesn’t transfer because of the flexibility. Here’s hoping the flexibility additions you mentioned will allow me to use this system the way I think. I’m not familiar with the GTD system like most others seem to be, so I go by my own way of organizing. I suspect you may have other customers who think the way I do, so I am hoping my input is of value.
Anyway, thanks for the response which allowed my to find my work around.
Hope you’re planning on posting some pix post-Expo for those of us who can’t make it …
@Michael:
I just noted that Things is missing from this relevant software list:
a(http://www.pure-mac.com/pims.html, Pure-Mac)
This site is very popular among Mac users, who often search it when looking for software.
@Vasily: We definitely will be taking pictures and I’ll be sure to post a post-Macworld wrap up blog entry with said pictures. ;)
@iuko: Thanks for the heads up. I’ve contacted them to see if they will add us to their list.
Things has been reviewed over at Ars Tecnica:
http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/11/13/hands-on-with-things-for-mac-and-iphone
I’ve been working with the Mac version of Things and am very impressed. I do have some questions that I can’t find answers to.
1. Is it possible to get a demo version of the iPhone version for my Touch? I don’t want to spend the money on either version until I’m sure the Touch version offers what I need.
2. Re: syncing, do you use MobileMe or simply a wifi network? If not Mobile Me, why?
3. Also re: syncing, I need to synch to two computers and my Touch. How do I do that? It’s essential to keep all of these up to date with the latest info.
Thanks. So far I love your product and can’t wait to see it at MacWorld. However, I’d love to get started before then.
@Patty:
1. Unfortunately, due to the way the App Store works, we cannot offer a proper demo version. We are currently working on a screencast that will give you a nice overview of how Things for iPhone and iPod touch works. We anticipate posting it within the next 2 weeks here: http://www.culturedcode.com/things/iphone/
2. We sync between Things for the iPhone and iPod touch and Things desktop using Wi-Fi. Whenever Apple releases the developer framework for native MobileMe over-the-air syncing for the iPhone/iPod touch, we definitely plan on integrating it.
3. We are currently working to integrate MobileMe syncing to allow you to sync Things between multiple Macs. We are working very hard to include this functionality in time for Macworld. Should something unforeseen occur that prevents us from making the deadline, it will be released as soon as possible, but do know that it is a priority for us.
Thanks for the nice comments. Please stop by our booth (#1438) and we’ll be glad to give you a demo! :)
Hi, just came by to check out the 1.2 xyle and saw the iPhone thing (thing). Keep up the good works guys — you make beautiful stuff!
/R
Is it still possible to get a free pass to Macworld if they are available.
@Nancy: Sorry, they’re all gone. You can still get a 15% discount on select Macworld Expo conference programs if you use the link in the blog post above.
What is happening with tags and areas on the iphone app, you really need to keep us informed and give us some estimates of time, 3 days,3 months what? It makes a wonderful app almost useless. Do I need to go over to omnifocus? Or wait please let me know
@luke: While we can’t commit to a specific date, I can tell you that we are hard at work on both tags and areas for Things for iPhone. I can also tell you that both are coming along very nicely and we’re getting very close.
Please hang in there and thank you for your continued support and patience.
You miss understand me I am not asking for a specific date…not asking for a commitment. I am asking for an estimated of time a hoped for goal. Surely you have these? I am sure this is what your manager asks of you. Are you not answerable to your customers even more? In the end it is us that decide whether your application sinks or swims.
I cant imagine you sitting opposite your boss and him asking the question and you reply.., well I am working hard, its coming along very nicely …were getting very close…hang in there…be patient.
If this were your car or your teeth or your well anything would you accept this answer?
your boss may accuse you of being wooly, patronising and evasive.
In these times of credit crunch I hope the will be a a shift in view of software makers from a community of frustrated users who are in fact your real boss and will decide whether your company sinks or swims.
Dont tell me to be patient, answer the question and do your job.
Somehow I know who jeff is.
LOL.
His boss more than likely doesn’t know when it’ll be ready, btw.
Very close means very little in development unfortunately.
it can be tomorrow or weeks, or worse.
Just the nature of trying to get everything pieced together.
The technology involved on all fronts is a bit new to really gauge how long it’ll come together as intended.
ETAs are made to be broken or break a shipping product, so I’ll be waiting it out.
@luke: I think Michael’s reply was pretty fair. As a software developer myself, (http://thoughtfultree.com) I can vouch for the fact that sometimes, we just can’t know exactly when task A or B will be completed.
Because of the nature of programming with a growing, evolving platform, we can’t always be sure of exactly what steps are necessary to accomplish a task or add a feature, etc. We can do our best to set a deadline, but with as everything in life, things don’t always go according to plan.
To be honest, I think the answer Michael gave was better than him “estimating”, because I would feel pretty gypped if he said 2 weeks and it turned out to be a month. And honestly, there are times when this would just be a pure guess. Sometimes the smallest detail of an app turns out to take 7 times longer than anyone anticipated.
Just my 2 cents.
My company develops software as well. Often an iterative testing process can take as long as development, so until you’ve passed all your tests and know how you’re going to solve them, it’s hard to give a precise date. Very close seems pretty reasonable for this size of a purchase.
@luke: It is more than clear from your post that you are disappointed, and we are sorry for that. We are always very careful when giving time estimates, because unforeseeable things can happen along the way.
Tags on the iPhone are actually the best example. We have them ready since about a week (with only minor glitches still to fix), but when actually testing them on the device, we found that we didn’t like a few of the UI details. So we went ahead and came up with alternative solutions. And even now, we are actually debating whether we should change an important aspect of how you filter by Tags or leave that for the next update.
We do all of this because we really care about Things, and because we want to deliver the best experience possible to our users (– which we consider as friends or allies rather than bosses ;) ).
Thank you Im sorry if I seems short …I have real need to organise my life . As with a lot of other people the way we manage our lives affects people we care about and the things we do…thank you for explaining and your understanding of my frustrations.
I have ADHD and to be honest Things is the closest to a real answer for sorting I have ever seen. This is a real disabilty that affects every day of my life I desperately need answers, so do many others in my position. I see real hope here. Please keep on the good work but do it quickly! :-) best wishes… Luke sorry I lost it a bit ….actually I need you. So I better be nice I guess.
Sync via g3… anyway to do this in the future? I already bought the iphone app and will buy the desktop version but syncing via wifi doesn’t do me good if I just use 3g all the time… also there should be an auto sync so that if I do enter the network with wifi enabled it should somehow sync automatically rather then having to go into the app and then hitting sync…
@Bart: We are indeed exploring multiple options to extend our syncing options beyond Wi-Fi sync.
