Here is a detailed description of how to set up an ad hoc computer-to-computer network to sync an iPhone/iPod:
1) Click on the Wi-Fi symbol at top right of the Mac screen.
2) Go down the menu and select “Create Network.”
3) A window will pop-up titled “Create a Computer-to-Computer network.”
4) Click on the OK button without changing anything or checking any boxes. The Wi-Fi
symbol will change to an icon that looks similar to a TV.
5) Open Mac version of Things.
6) Click on the “Things” menu at the top of the screen and scroll down to select “Preferences.”
7) In the “Preferences” popup window, click on the iPhone icon.
8) Now turn on your iPhone and open the “settings” program. (It is the one with the symbol of three gear wheels.)
9) Touch turn on “Airplane Mode.” The phone signal will be replaced by an airplane and Wi-Fi will turn off.
10) Touch the Wi-Fi button to go to the Wi-Fi turn on screen.
11) Touch the button to turn on Wi-Fi.
12) Wait for the name of your computer to appear on the screen. Then touch it, to make a Wi-Fi connection between your iPhone and your computer.
13) When a check mark appears by the name of your computer, you have create an ad hoc network between the phone and the computer.
14) Now go back to the main application screen of your iPhone. There should be both an airplane and a Wi-Fi symbol on the top left of the screen. If it is not there, wait 20 seconds and they both should appear. (If they are not both there, repeat the process step by step in the Settings program.)
15) Go back to your Mac and the “iPhone” pop-up that came up in Things Preferences.
16) Click on the “open assistant” button.
17) A “Mobile Device Setup” window will pop-up and list the name of your iPhone. Wait until is appears and click on it. (If it does not appear, check to make sure that both the airplane and Wi-Fi symbol are still at the top left of the iPhone screen. If necessary, repeat the above steps.)
17.5) Touch the Things app icon on the iPhone to fire it up.
18) Once have selected the name of you iPhone, click the “choose” button.
19) A number will appear on the Mac screen and almost immediately, four blank squares will show up on the iPhone screen. Insert the numbers from your computer screen and choose the “done” button on the iPhone.
20) The numbers on the Mac screen will change color and the “sync now” button will be highlighted. Click on the “sync now” button. Your devices should not be paired.
21) If you are satisfied with the syncing, you can open up settings on your iPhone and turn off the Airplane mode. You will now be able to make and receive phone calls.
22) If you click on the Wi-Fi-TV symbol again, then select disconnect from “COMPUTER’S NAME”, you can reconnect to your normal Wi-Fi signal.
