Importing Data from iGTD

The Things iGTD importer allows you to migrate your existing to-dos from iGTD to Things. All the information you have entered in iGTD will be imported into Things.

The iGTD Importer requires AppleScript support in Things. Please make sure that you have Things version 1.1.3 or later running on your computer.

If you already have existing to-dos in Things, we recommend to backup that data first.

Instructions

To migrate your to-dos from iGTD to Things, please follow these instructions:

Download and install Things on your Mac.

Download iGTD To Things Importer.

Make sure that Things is running and launch the iGTD Importer. Once the iGTD Importer has successfully launched, you will see this dialog:

The iGTD Importer provides default settings which should work for most users. However, you can always customize the default settings, as follows:

iGTD task priorities are mapped to tags in Things. You can change the tag names which will be used:

Equally, iGTD task effort will be mapped to tags in Things. You can change the tag names which will be used:

Since there is no “waiting for” concept in Things, all to-dos marked as “waiting for” in iGTD can be marked with a tag in Things (which you can change, if you like): Image:igtd-importer-img4.png

After reviewing the settings, please click “Import” to start migrating your to-dos from iGTD to Things. Wait until import is complete before using Things again.

What happens during the import

First, the tags for mapping of iGTD priorities/efforts are created, if necessary.

Next, the iGTD context hierarchies get imported as tags in Things. Subcontexts are created as subtags.

Subsequently, all custom tags (i.e. "Important", "Urgent") used in iGTD are mapped to tags in Things under a parent tag labeled "Other". Next, all non-project to-dos and finally all projects and their to-dos get exported.

The following iGTD task properties are exported:

  • context - as a Things tag
  • project - as a Things project
  • tags - as Things tags
  • links - as content of a Things to-do note
  • notes - included in a Things to-do note
  • contact - as a link to the Address Book card (if found)
  • priority - as a Things tag (if enabled)
  • effort - as a Things tag (if enabled)
  • waiting-for status - as a Things tag (if enabled)
  • maybe status - to-do goes to the Someday list
  • start date - to-do gets scheduled and goes to the Scheduled list. This applies only to to-dos which are not part of a project or area.
  • due date
