Working with Areas (FAQ)

I don't understand Areas

Areas are a further level of hierarchical structure extending projects. They can contain both projects and todos. While projects are short-term goals that can be completed, an area represents an ongoing responsibility that cannot be completed. See also When to Use Tags, Projects, or Areas of Responsibility

To add more structure to your projects, you can put them into different areas. Inside an area you can create new projects with a toolbar button at the bottom.

How to subsume an existing project under an area

There are basically two ways to subsume an existing project under an area:

  • Select the Projects list in the sidebar. A list of all your projects is displayed on the right side. Select a project and use the File button in the toolbar or drag it onto an area in the sidebar.
  • Or simply drag a project from the sidebar onto an area.

How do I delete an Area?

Before deleting an area:

… if you wish to keep all the active contents as isolated items:

  • Select the respective Area in the sidebar
  • Select all it's contents: Edit → Select All
  • Detach the items from the area: Items → Detach from Project/Area

… if you wish to keep a record of all the previously logged items detached from the area:

  • Select the Logbook in the sidebar
  • Select all the items relating to the area you want to delete (Note: you can add a temporary tag to the area to help picking the correct logged items)
  • Detach the items from the area: Items → Detach from Project/Area

To delete an area and all of its contents (To Dos, Projects, Logged Items, etc.):

  • Click on the disclosure triangle at the left hand side of the Area heading in the sidebar
  • Select the respective Area in the sidebar
  • Click on the gear button at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Delete Area
