Recurring Tasks XXL Main Things 0.9.0.1

The most substantial improvement in version 0.9 is, of course, recurring to-dos and projects. See below for an entire post describing this new feature.

Here is a list of some of the other improvements:

Choose Things Library

This is clearly an advanced feature that should be used with care. When holding down the option/alt key while opening Things, a dialog will be displayed that lets you either create a new Things library or choose an existing one. This feature is practically identical to a similar one in iTunes.

You can now store your library in a place that might be more convenient for your backup routine. Choosing a web-based location is not possible.

This feature is probably most interesting for people who would like to carry their Things library with them. Plug in a portable or USB flash drive and move your Things library from its default location Home/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/ to that drive. Move the entire Things folder and don’t forget to quit Things first! The next time you open Things, it will ask you for the new location.

Better error handling

Things will now catch more unexpected errors and also offers a convenient way to send reports via email. Due to some limitations in Tiger this feature works best on Leopard.

Duplicate

There is a new Duplicate menu command in the Edit menu.

Scheduled

The Postponed list is now called “Scheduled”. There are a couple of improvements here. Since the Scheduled list will be the home of our recurring item templates, “Postponed” no longer seemed appropriate. But more about this in the post below. Scheduled now uses relative dates and groups items under headings like “Next week”, “April”, etc.

Move to Today

When an item is postponed, there is an option to automatically move it to the Today list on the specified date.

There are also many bug fixes, some of them quite substantial. More details can be found in the Release Notes.

  1. Great! I love how you guys have the ability to add features that are perfect and don’t get in the way. The new features also don’t increase the complexity of the application (for the user, ie. me).

Looking forward to using these new features and just wanted to say great job! You guys just “get it”.

  2. After 5 minutes of testing : I can’t wait to see the final release.Only one little thing : Why did you change the font of the tags. It’s much harder to read now… Great Work ! Thank You.

  3. You say “recurring to-dos and projects” but I only see the ability to create recurring to-dos. Is it really possible to create a recurring project as well?

  4. I love things! Thanks for the update, I’ll be the first to buy the final app ;)

I think whats missing the most next is drag and dropping in the sidebar and iCal Sync. Beneath that the program is nearly perfect for me!

  5. @Luhmann: I’ve just added a FAQ page on how to create a recurring project.

  6. @Christoph: Among smaller improvements and fixes the sidebar and iCal sync are indeed the areas we are focusing on next.

  7. Thanks! Looking forward to checking this major u/g out.

  8. You guys rock! Truly! This new Scheduled section is great–I especially love how you designed it to group “Next week”, “April”, “Daily” tasks together.

You’ve added more beautiful design and function to an already beautiful and wonderfully functional product. Thanks for all your remarkable work!

  9. Things Update: Recurring Tasks…

In Vergleichstests von GTD-Tools wird Things meist als die Anwendung gesehen, die am weitesten vom eigentlich GTD-Konzept abweicht und am meisten Freiheit bzgl. der Lieblingsorganisationstechnik zulässt.

… Neben den rein zeitbezogenen Möglichkei…

  10. Amazing. I love you guys. Keep up the good work.

  11. I have found a way of keeping Things synced on two or more computers. I’ve published full details here: http://darkknowledge.info/page2/page4/page3/page3.html

  12. Thank you! Things is easily one of the most-used apps on my Mac. This really is wonderful work you guys are doing.

  13. This is an excellent update, keep up the good work!

  14. i love your app and while this update was helpful (and im sure took tons of work) , i wish you would concentrate on new features a bit - like project nesting, or multi user!!

    project nesting really a must . .

but thanks for the update . . looking forward to more . .
you def getting my money : )

  15. ps
def one my most used apps (besides safari adium mail etc)

    things, pages and ical

  16. I just discovered Things. In the 1 day that I’ve been using it, I prefer it to any of the other GTDs I’ve tried. I also like the attitude behind the way you are developing the application. Thanks.

  17. This is fantastic. In the month or so that I’ve been using Things, it’s become the benchmark to my productivity. It is THE app I’ve been wanting for years.

I love how the repeating tasks don’t impede the ways I’ve already become comfortable using the app. Good job!

  18. The updates look good, thanks guys.

  19. Thanks for the update.

But there’s one thing missing: One can not double click in the grey area below the tasks to create a new To Do?
What happened? This was such a great feature! Or did I just dream that it existed? :)

  20. excellent work guys - I am absolutely hanging out for iCal sync as I am running too many separate pieces of software at the moment - please please can we have iCal sync next

  21. I also loved the double click in the grey area to make a new ToDo - pleae can we have that back??

  22. Thanks for the update. The programme is a jewel. I can keep track of my own ideas now :)

Keep up the work. You have my support.

  23. I found a very small bug:

In the View-Go to menu, it still says “postponed” instead of scheduled. :)

  24. I love you. Best GTD app ever.

  25. […] Entwickler twittern sich ja einen ab und basteln eifrig. Neuerungen in der aktuellen Version sind hier […]

  26. Lovely - just beginning to really enjoy this app.

One thing - why did you choose to get rid of the lovely transition animations I remember (and as seen in the screencast). I.e. when expanding a project (or area i think) to view the containing tasks there was this great sliding transition that had function - it told you where you’d come from and where you’ve gone. It seems harsh and chunkier without it. Like I have to pause to check I clicked the right place. I find these new iPhone esque core animations in UI’s very useful and more intuitive than the olden day static ones (whilst appreciating you could go overboard with them). Please bring it back. It also looks prettier.

Did anyone else have a preference with this?

  27. One question about repeating events: how do you handle “second Tuesday of the month” and other day-of-week dependent monthly events? It’s not the same as “Every X weeks”.

  28. Fantastic work! I’m enjoying the new update very much and am looking forward to your first full release. The work you have done is tremendous! Keep it up!

  29. @cb: In the Repeat dialog, choose “monthly”. You will be presented with two more popup menus. Choose “2nd” from the first one and “Tuesday” from the second. It is really that simple.

  30. I’m trying to set up a recurring weekly event, but I can’t change the default chosen date. I want the first event to be on Wednesday, March 26th and then every 6 weeks after that date.

Setting it up I choose weekly, every 6 weeks on Wednesday and the default date is set to 4/9. If I change it to 3/26, it reverts to 4/9 when I OK the change!

    Am I missing something?

  31. @mgseeley: I couldn’t find any problems here. In Scheduled I choose “New Repeating”. I select “weekly”, enter “6″, and select “Wednesday”. A start date of 3/19 is suggested. Note that this is different from the 4/9 you reported. Then I change “19″ to “26″ and click “OK”. The template is created correctly with a start date of 3/26.

  32. Strange… I still see the problem. I can change the date as you say, and hit OK. But if I choose “reschedule” I see that the date has reverted to 4/9.

You state that when you change the weekly interval to 6 and choose Wednesday, the date is shown as 3/19 (the next Wednesday). The follow are the dates that are displayed when I adjust the weekly interval and day of the week.

When I first choose “weekly” for a new repeating event. the default interval is 1 week and Sunday. The default date is shown as the next Sunday, 3/23. If I change Sunday to Wednesday the date correctly changes to 3/19.

If I then change the interval from 1 week to 2, the date is changed to 3/26. If I then change the interval to 3 weeks, the date reverts to 3/19! 4 weeks gives me 3/26 again. 5 weeks gives me 4/2. 6 weeks gives me 4/9.

I can manually change the date, but it doesn’t stick. If I choose “reschedule” for the event to verify the date, it has reverted to one of the dates listed above, dependant on the weekly interval I chose.
