Things touch 1.4 beta launched

1 2 3 Next
We have just launched the new beta for the next version of Things touch. It includes global search, landscape support, and repeating tasks.

Since Apple only allows us to include a maximum of 100 users in our beta tests for the iPhone, unfortunately we couldn't send the beta out to all users who were interested.

If you would like to get a glimpse of the new version, here are a few screenshots showing off the new functionality:

Landscape:

(and yes, this can be turned off in the settings :))

This is great. Thanks a lot for sharing. Any idea about arrival time?
Hey guys this looks awesome - what are we looking at in terms of push, if anything? I like the repeating features!
very nice! I'm sad I wasn't a part of the beta program :( but oh well, I'll get it soon!
Awesome. Can't wait for these features to go live.
Guys, when Werner posted this it was approximately 1:30am in Germany.

We appreciate you gentlemen burning the midnight oil for us.
Werner,

You just don't get it.

Unless over-the-air sync become a reality, this app is useless.

It's funny how lazy you guys are.

We paid $9.99 and you promised us over-the-air sync will release when apple is ready.

I see all the apps have over-the-air sync now except you.

Why? Too lazy?

I'm pleased that Things touch is getting some lovin'! Can't wait to get my hands on it.
Great news.

In the new version, does Syncing now work properly. (e.g. you no longer have to sync each day to ensure changes don't get stomped over during launch.)

I've taken Things Touch of my iPhone since I can't use it with inconsistent syncing. I'd love to start using it again, and the new release looks nice.

So, is syncing fixed now?

Thanks.
Sweet news! I'm excited to see the CC team work kinks out of Things for Touch and develop it into a deeper tool.

I'm with BWhaler in that I've had so many missed tasks since you have to remember to sync every day first thing before you use Things. Here's hoping this new release will resolve that bug.

Thanks Cultured Code Team for your diligent work (contra @dannychang)
I too am wondering why there was no mention of the sync problem being fixed. I was one of the first buyers of Things both for my iPhone and for my laptop, and I felt a little cheated when I discovered there was such a very fundamental flaw in the syncing process between them. I felt even more cheated when it took CC so long to admit that it even WAS a flaw and they were initially dismissive of those of us who complained about the problem.

I'm not at all sure you can give CC credit for wonderful work when we still can't sync their applications without jumping through hoops. That's why a lot of us bought them both in the first place. We can only hope they have finally fixed the problem, but seeing no mention of it in the notes for the new version -- particularly after all the ill will and drama that the problem has led to in this forum -- does make me wonder.
@dannychang: you can only speculate that Werner is lazy. But everybody knows for sure that you are a *******.
Great news, I've been waiting for landscape support for 6 months. Since I depend so much on TT & TM, this is a surprising Christmas present. Thank you CC.

Merry Christmas to all
Guys, thanks for all your hard work. I can't imagine my life without Things. The repeating tasks on TT are definitely a welcome feature, especially for those who don't have the desktop app.

There are rude and inappropriate comments above, but... the sync does need to be fixed. It's buggy and it's extremely slow and definitely unlike the level of quality we've come to expect from CC.
@Garbo

...do not stoop to his level.
woot woot ... can't wait to get this new build ... a big super thanks to culture code folks for bringing new features to iPhone app .... Things is THE only GTD app that has right balance .... :) ... u folks have a great day !!!!!
Nice! Can i test it 2 please? :-)

Btw, is there any new about over the air syncing?
@jakeneedham In a post from several months ago, Werner does report the sync problem has been fixed. I believe that I've seen other, more recent reports, here on the forums that it's been fixed but this was the first I found in a forum search.

So excited to see landscape support finally arriving -- this is way more crucial for me than OTA syncing!

Thanks for making a great app!
@trumpetlamp
Yes, I recall that thread because I have been carefully following the sync issue since I discovered it.

On the other hand, what I read in that thread is that Werner says a fix is being tested and will be included in a future release. Until it IS included, the problem is certainly not fixed, and we all continue to sync manually every single morning on pain of losing data if we do not.

I sincerely hope the sync fix is in this release, of course. The point I was making was that the notes we have seen so far about the release don't mention it. That has to concern me. I am hopeful that someone at CC will read this thread and tell me that the fix is indeed there and my concern is completely unnecessary.
Re the last remaining syncing bug: [twitter.com]
Thanks for the information. Can't wait. Any information how long usually the beta-testing take?
On the "Details of a repeating task" screenshot, I believe it'll be better if the "Task Title" and "Notes" to be on top of the "Repeating Schedule". The current implementation is awkward and the "Pause Repetitions" button would be pushed further down (thus require scrolling) if the "Notes" is long.

By the way, can repeating tasks be created in other task section (Inbox, Project, etc) too?
My most wanted feature would be sub-folders/ projects..
this is in many other todo task managing apps and its really necessary for all my work!

Dont get why this hasnt been implemented yet??
Definitely looking forward to this update. The screenshots look amazing! I'm looking forward to the repeating task option more than anything. Everything else is just the icing on the cake. Great job, guys!
Great to see Repeated tasks in TT! Cant wait for this update!
Looks like a very nice interface for the new features, just as we would anticipate from you. Thank you for the screenshots. I look forward to using the new features.

I want to jump in with jakeneedham and BWhaler here and be very clear what we are talking about: there's a bug that causes manual changes performed on the Things Mac Today list before the first sync of the day to be overridden by the items on the Today list from Things Touch. Werner told us at the end of August that this bug is in Things Touch and not Things Mac, that it was fixed, and that the fix is included in Things Touch 1.4. Roman said the same less than a week ago. I saw that twitter comment of Jürgen's:
Fixing the infamous Today-list-reorder-after-syncing-when-scheduled/due-items-got-activated bug on Things Mac.
the other day when gary posted it in another thread, and I wondered (in fact I almost started a new thread about this) what "infamous" bug he is fixing in Things Mac, when the syncing bug that we're all concerned about, we're told, is in Things Touch. Hopefully I'm just parsing Jürgen's sentence incorrectly (it's hard to cram information into a tweet). What is this bug that he's talking about?
@JF_Herschel: This bug has several root causes. With additional changes in Things Mac it is getting fixed 100%, but the changes in Things Touch will fix it already by about 90%. Which means, by far the most important changes have to be done in Things Touch to fix the issue.
I will post more information on this bug in a second. But for now, thank you all for your nice comments about our UI and thanks for your support.
isn't 'lack of OTA sync' a syncing bug?

in any case, psyched for the progress that IS being made.
Landscape mode! Finally I won't have to rely on the "smart keyboard" and just type accurately :)

I just bought my TT and TM licenses last week. As I'm sure is the case with many other Things users, I bought the apps for their excellent implementation of GTD concepts and simplicity of interface. IMO, the only real issues with the app remaining are sync issues, and I think after they are addressed Things will be a "complete" application with NO NEED FOR OTHER STUPID FEATURES!

Great work guys, whoever is in charge of user experience over there is the bomb!
@Andy, Werner:

Thanks for your replies. Werner, thanks a lot for both this and your other post.
If you'd like to get a small behind the scenes impression and don't mind the discussion is in German, take a look at this presentation our very own Werner gave last summer showing an early alpha version. He mainly talks about the issues of adding landscape support and the user interface challenges of adding extensive repeating task support.

Many thanks to the CC crew! Looks great. Looking forward to the release of TT 1.4.
Too bad i cant speak German :(
Could anybody translate it for us none German speaker?
Landscape. Hallelujah.
I have a suggestion for those of you who have a problem remembering to sync your iPhones every morning. There is an iPhone app called "Clock". In it, you can set alarms. I have one that goes off every weekday morning at 6:45, 15 min before I leave for work. When it goes off, I sync. Pretty hi-tech, huh?

Am looking forward to having repeating tasks and yes, landscape mode.
@salgud:

I have two computers. A home computer and a work computer in addition to an iphone. Do you get it now? Do you?
actually you probably DON'T get it.

so here's the deal. I'd like to use Things on my home computer. THen when I go to work, I'd like to use THings on my work computer and have it sync.

THen when I go do errands (be it from home OR work) I'd like my iphone be be synchronized with whichever computer I used last.

It's a simple feature request, one that culture code has received MORE THAN ANY OTHER. Clearly I'm not the only one.

In fact, I've just moved to Omnifocus for this reason.
